Episode 2: What to plant in the middle of the border. Remember to think about height and shape as well as repetition, but also bring in some of those ethereal taller plants to bring in an extra dimension. There are loads of plant options for this planting layer and I list my favourite towards the end for you to experiment with. 🌱🌱 Caveat - My garden planting is brand new, so it's not the best example as the plants are still very young, but I've a mix of those listed in the middle layer. I wouldn't design a garden without some form of grass in it - they give SO much bag for their buck - bringing interest from May to February/March, or whenever you cut them down. So first up on my list of essential grasses is the Pennisetum. She needs full sun and good drainage and many are hardy down to -5. If your winters dip below this or you have very wet soil - this one may not be the one for you, but I've more coming for you to consider! What do you think of Pennisetum? Yey or Ney? | Pollya

Here's what I'm growing in my heavenly @alitex_ greenhouse this April, and a bit of a greenhouse tour too. April is the perfect time to sow annual cut flowers such as cosmos, scabious and snapdragons. And of course it's also a great time to sow vegetable seeds - my greenhouse is stuffed full of courgettes, tomatoes, chilies, and beans the former of which are waiting for the frosts to pass before braving the great outdoors. If you don't have a greenhouse then a warm and sunny windowsill will do t

A super simple class on deadheading Salvias such as the ever popular Caradonna. Simply cut each flower spike once it's gone over and then when the top cluster is done, take it down to the next set of buds. When it completely stops flowering cut the whole thing down to the ground and more new growth and hopefully blooms (depending on how far through the season we are) will emerge. ✂️ Gimme those questions in the comments | Pollyanna Wilkinson Garden Design

In this new series, I will be talking you through my absolute favourite plants, that I wouldn't be without and that you might want to plant too. First up we're talking Hardy geraniums - one of the hardest working, lowest maintenance plants you could possibly add to your garden. Happy in full sun to part shade and most soil types - she flowers from April/May to the frosts - a good 6-7 months. There are so many to choose from: Azure rush, Orion, Brookside, Rozanne, Patricia, Dreamland, Album or Ra

Next up in my essential plants is the brilliant Euphorbia. With over 2000 species to choose from there is a euphoria for every garden! In this lesson, I'll talk you through some of my favourites and how to use them. But please do be careful - the sap is toxic and we don't want it on your skin or your eyes, so do use protective gear when dealing with them. The biggest mistake with lavender is not pruning it straight after flowering to keep it in check. Not pruning equals Woody stems, a messy form and potentially even less flowers follow these simple instructions to have beautiful lavender year on year. 💜 | Pollyanna Wilkinson Garden Design
